Welcome to the city of Memphis! Founded in 1819 by several early Americans including Andrew Jackson. The area was inhabited by other nations prior to the founding date, Hernando De Soto encountered American Indians in 1541, Fort Assumption was built by French explorers in 1739, Fort San Fernando de las Barrancas was built by Spanish explorers in 1795 and the Chickasaw Nation ceted the land to the United States in 1818 by way of treaty. The railroad was completed from Charleston to Memphis in 1857. In 1862 Union troops occupied the city and in 1892 the first bridge accross the Mighty Mississippi to Memphis was completed.

Memphis offers many points of interest including Elvis' Graceland Mansion, The Memphis Belle, a WWII B-17, has a permanent home on Mud Island, where you can also view a water flowing replica of the entire Mississippi River with the various engineered flood controls.
The Pyramid (3rd largest in the world) hosts the Memphis Grizzlies Basketball and other events. Many other activities are available for the entire family such as the Memphis Zoo, Botanical Garden and the Lichterman Nature Center to name a few.
