The United States acquired the vast territory of Florida from Spain in 1837 and the U.S. Army built Fort Gatlin in 1838. The first American settlers began moving to the site now known as Orlando in 1850. The new town was originally called Jernigan after Aaron Jernigan, an early settler and trader. The name was changed in 1857 in honor of a soldier, Orlando Reeves, who was killed in battle with Seminole Indians near the area now known as Lake Eola.
The principle industry in the 1850's and 1860's was cattle and the town consisted of just a few shacks and a saloon. In 1875 the town of Orlando was incorporated with a population of 85. Orlando got it's first railroad station in 1881 and the town's population began to grow at a rapid rate.
Today nearly 1.8 million people live in Orlando and the city is best known for it's tourist industry. The city's nickname is "The City Beautiful" though plans are underway to change the title through a local contest.
Orlando is home to Orlando Magic, The Orlando Preditors, and also had a stronghold on a minor-league ice hockey team known as the Orlando Solar Bears.
Orlando is world renowned for it's arts and entertainment for young and old alike. Activities are nearly endless as the city caters to it's largest industry of tourism. Theme parks are abundant offering exillerating rides and experiences for any interest or thrill seeker, entertainment, dining experiences, museums, and exhibits are also desired destination.
